PROPS FOR THE SKY is a new performance work by Holly Slingsby, taking
place over three days at SHIFT.
In this work the artist
takes on the guise of a series of gods and mythical characters, using
improvised costumes and props. As the performance progresses, these deities make and remake themselves, producing
a series of hybrids – gods with vanity problems, gender confusion and split personalities.
The setting is an artist’s studio, providing the
means for these protagonists to create new attributes and appearances
for themselves, as well as referencing the idea of the studio as a
pseudo-sacred space, where something miraculous or alchemical can take place.
Through this work Slingsby deepens her fascination with iconography from various religious and pagan traditions, exploring how images and figures cross-fertilise and later come to be subsumed into
contemporary culture. Using
everyday materials to evoke
the divine, she interrogates our continuing attempts to envisage the invisible.
Holly Slingsby (born Oxford,
1983) lives and works in London. She studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing
and Fine Art, Oxford University, and the Slade School of Art, London. Her
recent performances include those at the Barbican Centre, Fold Gallery and
Angus Hughes Gallery, London; Modern Art Oxford; and FEM 10 Festival, Girona,
Spain.

SLUICE is both exhibition space and platform for
discussion and creation. Featuring an open layout for expansive
installations, performative works and screenings including a
multifaceted supporting programme consisting of a preview breakfast,
panel discussions, art-making educational activities for children and
young people and artist publishing bookstands.
Primarily (but not solely) focusing on artist run
not-for-profit spaces, SLUICE does not wish to be didactic but rather
provide an informal and accessible temporary platform for young
galleries and project spaces to exhibit their artists’ work, gain
exposure and encourage dialogue between artists, curators and audiences.
Located in central London, a few minutes walk from
Bond Street Underground station. Running over the weekend of 15-16
October with late opening and free entry SLUICE is designed to enable
access to all. SLUICE will serve as a punctuation point to the London

press release:
For Selby’s exhibition at SHIFT, he uses the Buster Keaton short film that the exhibition takes as its title in order to explore the function of the gallery space and its domestic context. He will be constructing a new installation work combining elements of kinetic sculpture, drawing and film.
‘The Electric House’, made in 1922 (for the second time after Keaton broke his leg during its original production) was screened a year before Le Corbusier’s text ‘Vers Une Architecture’ rang out the modernist mantra ‘the house as a machine for living in’. With his typical sense of both technological and humorous invention, Keaton re-engineers a house into an electrified environment of gadgets and objects. At a time when domestic electricity was barely in a third of homes, his meticulously constructed stage set emphasised the potential for a dislocation between user and object. The elaborate and ingenious nature of his inventions act as a method to test both Keaton’s capabilities as a comic as well as question the viewer’s relationship to materiality (and the modernist prerogative).
Within Selby’s own work, he constructs mechanical and technological devices, as prototyped parodies, to critique physical interaction and observation. It is this uncomfortable, awkward yet often humorous relationship between body, space and technological object that he will explore in the exhibition.

TOWER HAMLETS SPRING OPENin The Mile End Art PavilionArtists' Reception: Wednesday 30 March, 6.00 – 9.00pm
Exhibition continues Friday 1 Arpil – Saturday 9 April
About:
Tower Hamlets Spring Open is a survey of the large and diverse artist community living or working in the borough of Tower Hamlets. Held in the 5000sqft Mile End Art Pavilion, the exhibition is selected and curated by Iavor Lubomirov and Anna Bleeker of ALISN, William Hughes of Angus-Hughes Gallery, Charlie Dutton of Charlie Dutton Gallery, and Paul Good and Kirsty Wood of SHIFT.
ALISN invited artists living or working in Tower Hamlets to submit work with a particular emphasis on large-scale ambitious projects, sculptures, or installations in all mediums, including performance, video, sound and photography. The resulting selection reveals a range of unexpected undercurrents, with much of the work resonating particularly with the architecture of the borough and the gallery.

the show brings together seventeen artists who first meet at braziers international artists workshop. braziers 2010 was a two week residency in august this year, where the artists were asked to work collaboratively and produce work in response, or to respond to, the then up coming music festival SUPERNORMAL, which took place at the end of the residency. for the show at SHIFT. each artist was asked to now make work in response to the said residency two months on. there has also been talk between the artists of continuing to collaborate and how that would happen. we hope the show to be a starting point for that conversation.

8.artist:adam watts
press release:
the starting point for adam watts installation is the maunsell sea forts used for defense in world war two and decommissioned in the 50's.
the installation acts as the heart of a power structure bigger than its self, at once integral yet forgotten. by creating an 'engine room' he suggests the work is only part of, but not the actual whole. the 'whole' will be left to interpretation.
the engine is still active, if just, but the suggestion of an outer structure leaves the installation in a limbo of creation and redundancy.
note: all materials have been sourced locally. from the adjoining building works to the olympic site at stratford.
